ŚrīRāmāyaṇam

(Itihāsa, a scripture of dharma, and a guide to śaraṇāgati)

What is ŚrīRāmāyaṇam?

ŚrīRāmāyaṇam, composed by ŚrīVālmīki Maharṣi, is not merely a great epic, but a sacred scripture that teaches dharma through lived life itself. Within ŚrīVaiṣṇava tradition, it is revered not only as the Ādi Kāvyam, but also as a profound scripture of śaraṇāgati. Through the divine life of ŚrīRāma, the avatāra of ŚrīmanNārāyaṇa, the living being learns the true nature of dharma, duty, grace, bhakti, and surrender.

Born in Ayodhyā, ŚrīRāma stands as the direct embodiment of dharma through His life. From royal responsibility to family duty, and from personal sacrifice to the welfare of the world, Rāmāyaṇam presents a complete direction for human life. This sacred text is not merely a narrative, but a path of living. Through the conduct of its characters, the nature of dharma becomes visible, while the unfolding of events reveals how karma, divine grace, and justice operate together within the world.

ŚrīRāma as the embodiment of dharma

ŚrīRāma is revered as Maryādā Puruṣottama, the ideal son, the noble husband of perfect fidelity, the self sacrificing king, and the supreme refuge of those who seek surrender. His personality reflects a profound balance between courage and humility, strength and compassion, obedience and sacrifice. Every major event within Rāmāyaṇam demonstrates how dharma is to be lived and protected.

Rāmāyaṇam as a scripture of śaraṇāgati

Within the ŚrīVaiṣṇava understanding, Rāmāyaṇam stands as a sacred scripture of surrender. It teaches that Bhagavān Himself comes forward to protect the one who seeks refuge, that sincere surrender even once is sufficient, and that divine grace stands above personal qualification.

ŚrīRāma’s celebrated declaration “sakṛdeva prapannāya…” is therefore regarded as one of the foundational statements of the doctrine of śaraṇāgati.

Why should Rāmāyaṇam be studied?

Rāmāyaṇam teaches the living being how to live dharmically within the world, how to seek refuge in Bhagavān without fear, and how divine grace surpasses individual effort. Through reading, parāyaṇam, and study, the mind gradually attains purity, steadiness, and maturity in bhakti. For this reason, it has remained a daily sacred text within homes, āśramas, and temples for centuries. Within ŚrīVaiṣṇava tradition, the study of Rāmāyaṇam is regarded as a genuine spiritual necessity.

The divisions of ŚrīRāmāyaṇam

ŚrīRāmāyaṇam is traditionally divided into seven kāṇḍas:

Bāla Kāṇḍa
Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa
Araṇya Kāṇḍa
Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa
Sundara Kāṇḍa
Yuddha Kāṇḍa
Uttara Kāṇḍa

Within each kāṇḍa, the workings of divine grace, dharma, bhakti, and śaraṇāgati become increasingly visible.

Within this section, study materials related to ŚrīRāmāyaṇam, portions suitable for parāyaṇam, and stotras that exist as integral parts of this Itihāsa are presented together in an organised manner suitable for reading, chanting, and silent contemplation.
