ŚrīmadBhāgavatam | Adhyayanam
Canto 01 | Chapter 5
Nārada's instruction to Vyāsa Mahārṣi
(Nārada Mahārṣi instructs Vyāsa Mahārṣi that the ultimate perfection of all scriptural knowledge lies only in exclusive devotion to ŚrīmanNārāyaṇa.)
Chapter introduction
After Nārada Maharṣi revealed the cause of Vyāsa Maharṣi’s inner dissatisfaction in Chapter Four and indicated the need for a work centered upon the pure glories of the Lord, Chapter Five expands that instruction in much greater depth. In response to Vyāsa Maharṣi’s questions, Nārada Maharṣi clarifies the relationship between bhakti, jñāna, and karma, thereby establishing the philosophical foundation necessary for the appearance of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam.
This chapter is not merely a discussion about composing a sacred text. Nārada Maharṣi explains that literature which does not directly glorify the Lord, however refined and ornamented it may be, cannot bestow the highest good upon the living being. Conversely, words filled with devotion to the Lord, even if lacking external literary perfection, have the power to purify the heart and promote genuine spiritual progress.
Through these teachings, the chapter presents bhakti not merely as one spiritual practice among many, but as the central principle that brings completeness to both knowledge and action. Nārada Maharṣi illustrates through various examples that human efforts cannot yield their fullest result without exclusive devotion to the Lord.
Toward the end of the chapter, Nārada Maharṣi recounts his own life experience, providing a direct demonstration of the transformative power of devotion. Thus, Chapter Five not only establishes the philosophical basis for the appearance of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam, but also stands as a pivotal chapter showing how bhakti can completely transform the life of a living being.

sūta uvāca : Sūta Maharṣi said; atha : then; tam : him; sukham āsīnam : seated comfortably; upāsīnam : sitting there; bṛhat śravāḥ : the greatly renowned one; devarṣiḥ : Devarṣi Nārada; prāha : spoke; viprarṣim : to the sage among brāhmaṇas, Vyāsa Maharṣi; vīṇā pāṇiḥ : holding a vīṇā in his hand; smayan iva : as if smiling.
Yathātatha Anuvādam
Then the greatly renowned Devarṣi Nārada, holding a vīṇā in his hand and appearing to smile gently, spoke in the following manner to Vyāsa Maharṣi, the sage among brāhmaṇas, who was seated there comfortably.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
At a time when Vyāsa Maharṣi was absorbed in deep inner reflection, Nārada Maharṣi approached him. Like a teacher who understands the state of his disciple’s mind, he began the conversation with a gentle smile. This moment marks the beginning of the great instruction that would ultimately lead to the appearance of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
O son of Parāśara Maharṣi, O greatly fortunate one, is your bodily condition or your mind attaining complete satisfaction?
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Rather than beginning his instruction directly, Nārada Maharṣi first seeks to understand the inner condition of Vyāsa Maharṣi. Perceiving that a sense of dissatisfaction still remains despite his outward accomplishments, he lays the foundation for the conversation by inquiring about his physical and mental contentment.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
You have composed the exceedingly wonderful Mahābhārata, which fully explains the subjects worthy of being known and extensively presents all the goals of human life.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi first acknowledges the immense contribution made by Vyāsa Maharṣi. Although he composed a great work such as Mahābhārata, which elaborates upon dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa, Nārada Maharṣi is about to reveal that a deeper incompleteness still remained within his heart.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
Even though you have studied the eternal Brahma tattva, which is worthy of being known, O master, you are grieving about yourself as though you have not attained fulfilment.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi reminds Vyāsa Maharṣi of his profound spiritual attainment. Although he had deeply studied the Vedas, Brahma tattva, and the eternal truths, complete inner satisfaction still seems absent from his heart. This observation prepares the way for the deeper question of why true peace has not yet arisen despite such extensive knowledge.

Vyāsa Maharṣi said: “All these things that you have spoken are indeed true in my case. Nevertheless, my heart is not attaining complete satisfaction. Therefore, O son of Brahmā, O one endowed with profound knowledge, I ask you what the root cause of this dissatisfaction is.”
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Vyāsa Maharṣi expresses his inner condition with great humility. Although he possesses scriptural knowledge, has composed sacred works, and has fulfilled his religious duties, he acknowledges that a sense of incompleteness still remains within his heart. Seeking to understand the true cause of this deficiency, he turns to Nārada Maharṣi for guidance and instruction.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
You know all mysteries, for you have worshipped the Primeval Lord. He is the Lord of all, both high and low, and although He creates, sustains, and dissolves the universe by His will alone through the qualities of material nature, He remains completely unattached to them.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Vyāsa Maharṣi acknowledges the spiritual authority of Nārada Maharṣi before placing his question before him. He recognizes Nārada as a sage who has directly realized the truth of the Lord and therefore understands all spiritual mysteries. For this reason, he approaches him as the teacher capable of revealing the true cause of his inner dissatisfaction.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
You travel through the three worlds like the sun. Like the wind, you are a witness to the inner condition of all beings. Therefore, please clearly explain the deficiency that remains in me, even though I have immersed myself in Brahma tattva through the path of dharma and sacred observances.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Vyāsa Maharṣi describes Nārada Maharṣi as a great yogi who understands not only the external world but also the inner condition of living beings. Although he has practiced dharma, observed sacred vows, and studied the scriptures, he still seeks to understand why true satisfaction has not arisen within him. Thus he approaches Nārada Maharṣi as the teacher capable of identifying and removing the real deficiency.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
ŚrīNārada Maharṣi said: “O Vyāsa Maharṣi, you have not sufficiently described the pure and spotless glory of the Lord. If the Lord is not pleased by it, then I consider that vision or understanding to be incomplete.”
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi now clearly reveals the root cause of Vyāsa Maharṣi’s dissatisfaction. Although many sacred works had been composed, the pure glory of the Lord had not been given its proper prominence. This verse stands as a foundational declaration of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam, teaching that even the greatest knowledge remains incomplete if devotion to the Lord and His divine qualities are not placed at the center.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
O best of sages, although dharma and the other goals of human life have been extensively described, the glory of Vāsudeva has not been explained in the same manner.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi now makes his criticism even more explicit. Although dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa have been discussed at great length, the glory of ŚrīmanNārāyaṇa, who is the ultimate foundation of all these pursuits, has not been presented with the same prominence. He gradually reveals that this omission is the real cause of Vyāsa Maharṣi’s inner dissatisfaction.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
Any composition adorned with elegant language but which never glorifies the world purifying glory of ŚrīHari is regarded by pure minded souls as a place of pilgrimage for crows. For the swan like great souls who are established in the Supreme Truth do not delight there.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi teaches that literature devoid of the Lord’s glory remains spiritually incomplete, regardless of its literary beauty or sophistication. Just as crows are attracted to refuse heaps, those absorbed in worldly interests may appreciate such works. However, great souls who possess the discernment of swans find true joy only where the divine qualities and glories of the Lord are celebrated.

tat : that; vāk visargaḥ : literary creation, composition of words; janatā agha viplavaḥ : that which destroys the sins of people; yasmin : in which; prati ślokam : in every verse; abaddhavati api : even if not perfectly composed from a literary standpoint; nāmāni : names; anantasya : of the Infinite Lord; yaśaḥ aṅkitāni : marked with His glory, bearing His fame; yat : which; śṛṇvanti : hear; gāyanti : sing; gṛṇanti : glorify; sādhavaḥ : saintly persons, great souls.
Yathātatha Anuvādam
A literary work in which the names and glories of the Infinite Lord are present in every verse can destroy the sins of people, even if it is not perfectly composed according to literary standards. Therefore, saintly persons hear it, sing it, and glorify it.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Having explained the limitation of literature that lacks glorification of the Lord, Nārada Maharṣi now describes the greatness of writings filled with the Lord’s names and glories. Even if literary embellishments are not perfect, compositions centered upon the Lord possess the power to purify living beings. For this reason, saintly persons delight in hearing, singing, and glorifying such works with devotion.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
Even the state of freedom from karmic bondage, if devoid of devotion to Acyuta, does not shine. Likewise, pure and uncontaminated knowledge does not shine. What then needs to be said about selfless action that is not offered unto the Lord? Such action cannot lead to the highest welfare.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here proclaims one of the central principles of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam. Spiritual attainments such as knowledge, detachment, and selfless action, however elevated they may appear, do not reach their full perfection unless they are connected with devotion to the Lord. This verse teaches that bhakti alone gives true beauty, purpose, and fulfilment to knowledge, renunciation, and action.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
Therefore, O greatly fortunate one, you are a seer of truth, possessed of pure fame, devoted to truth, and firm in your vows. For liberation from all bondage, contemplate with deep meditation the divine acts and pastimes of the Lord of mighty deeds.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Having explained the cause of Vyāsa Maharṣi’s dissatisfaction, Nārada Maharṣi now points to the remedy. He instructs him to deeply contemplate the Lord’s divine pastimes, qualities, and activities, and to make them known to the world. In this way, he indicates that a devotional work centered upon the Lord will illuminate the path of liberation from material bondage for all living beings.

tataḥ : apart from that, thereafter; anyathā : in a different way; kiñcana : anything; yat vivakṣataḥ : of one who wishes to describe; pṛthak dṛśaḥ : one who sees things as separate from the Lord; tat kṛta rūpa nāmabhiḥ : through the names and forms created by Him; na : not; kutracit : anywhere; kva api ca : under any circumstance; duḥsthitā : unstable; matiḥ : mind, intelligence; labheta : obtains; vāta āhata nauḥ iva : like a boat struck and driven by the wind; āspadam : a stable resting place, shelter.
Yathātatha Anuvādam
When a person who sees things as separate from the Lord seeks to describe subjects merely through the names and forms created by Him, his unstable mind can never find a firm resting place anywhere. It is like a boat driven about by the wind that cannot reach a stable shore.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi teaches that a worldview disconnected from the Lord can never provide lasting stability. When the names and forms of the world are treated as independent realities and their source in ŚrīmanNārāyaṇa is forgotten, the mind remains restless and unsettled. Only a vision that sees everything in relation to the Lord can provide true steadiness and genuine spiritual shelter.

jugupsitam : blameworthy, fit to be rejected; dharma kṛte : for the sake of dharma; anuśāsataḥ : by one who instructs; svabhāva raktasya : of a person attached to natural worldly inclinations; mahān vyatikramaḥ : a great error; yat : because; vākyataḥ : through such words or instruction; dharmaḥ iti : “this is dharma”; itaraḥ : an inferior activity; sthitaḥ : established, accepted; na manyate : does not consider; tasya : its; nivāraṇam : rejection, restraint, abandonment; janaḥ : ordinary people.
Yathātatha Anuvādam
It is a great mistake to prescribe, in the name of dharma, activities that ought to be rejected for those who are attached to their natural worldly inclinations. For when such activities are presented as dharma, people no longer regard them as things that should be restrained or abandoned.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here points out a danger in spiritual instruction. If people who are attached to worldly desires are encouraged to regard those very attachments as part of dharma, they will never feel the need to rise above them. Therefore, teachings that do not gradually direct the living being toward the Lord, even when well intentioned, can become obstacles to genuine spiritual progress.

vicakṣaṇaḥ : a discerning person, one of wisdom; asya : for this living being; arhati : is fit; veditum : to know; vibhoḥ : of the all pervading Lord; ananta pārasya : of Him whose greatness is boundless; nivṛttitaḥ : through turning away from material attachments; sukham : true happiness; pravartamānasya : of one engaged in; guṇaiḥ : the qualities of material nature; anātmanaḥ : one who has not realized the self; tataḥ : therefore; bhavān : you; darśaya : show, reveal; ceṣṭitam : deeds, activities, divine pastimes; vibhoḥ : of the Lord.
Yathātatha Anuvādam
A living being who is absorbed in the qualities of material nature and has not realized the self can become fit to understand the all pervading Lord of boundless greatness and attain true happiness through freedom from material attachment. Therefore, you should reveal the divine deeds and pastimes of the Lord.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
As long as a living being remains under the influence of the material qualities, true peace and happiness cannot be attained. By hearing about the Lord’s glories, qualities, and divine pastimes, the mind gradually turns away from worldly absorption and toward the Supreme Reality. Therefore, Nārada Maharṣi advises Vyāsa Maharṣi to compose a work that places the Lord’s divine activities at its center.

tyaktvā : having given up; sva dharmam : one’s prescribed duty; caraṇa ambujam hareḥ : the lotus feet of ŚrīHari; bhajan : worshipping, serving with devotion; apakvaḥ : before attaining maturity or perfection; atha : and; patet : falls away; tataḥ : from that position; yadi : if; yatra kva vā : in whatever circumstance; bhadram : loss, misfortune; abhūt : has occurred; amuṣya : for him; kim : what; kaḥ vā : and what indeed; arthaḥ : benefit; āptaḥ : has been obtained; abhajatām : by those who do not worship the Lord; sva dharmataḥ : merely by performing their prescribed duties.
Yathātatha Anuvādam
If a person gives up his prescribed duties and takes to the worship of the lotus feet of ŚrīHari, but falls from that path before attaining perfection, what loss has he actually suffered? On the other hand, what benefit has been gained by one who does not worship the Lord and merely performs his prescribed duties?
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi teaches here that no effort made on the path of devotion is ever wasted. Even if a devotee does not attain complete perfection and falls from the path, the spiritual progress already achieved is not lost. By contrast, one who performs worldly or religious duties without devotion to the Lord cannot attain the highest goal of life. This verse therefore emphasizes the enduring value and supremacy of bhakti.

Pada - Padārtham
tasya eva : for that alone; hetoḥ : purpose, goal; prayateta : one should strive; kovidaḥ : a wise and discerning person; na labhyate : is not attained; yat : which; bhramatām : by living beings wandering; upari adhaḥ : through higher and lower worlds; tat : that; labhyate : is obtained; duḥkhavat : just as suffering comes; anyataḥ : from other causes, by itself; sukham : happiness; kālena : through the force of time; sarvatra : everywhere; gabhīra raṁhasā : with profound and irresistible momentum.
Yathātatha Anuvādam
A wise person should strive only for that supreme goal which cannot be attained by living beings wandering through the higher and lower worlds. Happiness, like suffering, comes of its own accord through the powerful and irresistible flow of time.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi teaches that human life should not be spent merely pursuing worldly happiness. Material happiness and distress arise naturally through the course of time and cannot be completely controlled by human effort. Therefore, a truly wise person directs his energy toward attaining eternal goals such as devotion to the Lord and realization of the Supreme, which cannot be obtained through ordinary worldly pursuits.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
O dear one, a servant of Mukunda does not return to material bondage like ordinary people. For one who has tasted the divine nectar of embracing Mukunda’s lotus feet does not desire to abandon that experience again.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi explains that the joy obtained through devotion to the Lord cannot be compared to material pleasures. Once a living being genuinely experiences the sweetness of serving and remembering the Lord, the temporary attractions of worldly life lose much of their former appeal. In this way, the experience of bhakti brings about a lasting transformation within the heart and redirects the soul toward its eternal relationship with the Lord.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
This universe appears inseparably connected with the Lord, yet it remains distinct from Him. For its creation, maintenance, and dissolution all arise from Him. Although you yourself know this truth, only a portion of it has been presented by you.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here points to the relationship between the Lord and the universe. Although the entire cosmos depends upon the Lord and exists through Him, He is never limited to the universe itself. Nārada Maharṣi indicates that Vyāsa Maharṣi already understands this profound truth, yet its full Lord centered significance has not been completely brought out in his previous works.

O true seer, understand through your own spiritual realization that you are an empowered manifestation of the Supreme Person, the Supreme Lord. Although He is unborn, He appears as though born for the welfare of the world. Let this be understood as being for the upliftment of great souls.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi reminds Vyāsa Maharṣi of his true spiritual position. Vyāsa Maharṣi is not an ordinary human being but an empowered manifestation of the Supreme Lord who has appeared for the welfare of the world. Therefore, Nārada Maharṣi indicates that his writings should likewise serve the upliftment of all living beings by fully revealing the Lord’s divine glory and greatness.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
The sages have determined the unfailing and ultimate purpose of human austerity, scriptural study, properly performed sacrifices, noble teachings, and the gifts of knowledge and charity. That purpose is the glorification of the qualities of the Lord, who is praised by exalted hymns.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here concisely states the ultimate goal of all spiritual disciplines. Austerity, learning, sacrifice, charity, and other virtuous activities are not independent ends in themselves. They attain their true fulfilment only when they culminate in understanding, appreciating, and glorifying the divine qualities and greatness of the Lord.

O sage, in a previous birth I was the son of a maidservant. As a young boy, I was engaged in serving saintly sages learned in the Vedas who had chosen to remain in one place during the rainy season.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
At this point, Nārada Maharṣi begins to describe his own spiritual journey. Although he was not born into a high family, he received the great fortune of serving saintly devotees, and that association transformed the course of his life. Through this account, he demonstrates that devotion to the Lord does not depend upon birth, social position, or worldly status, but begins through the blessings of saintly association and humble service.

Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here describes the qualities that contributed to his spiritual advancement. Even at a young age, he cultivated humility, self control, a spirit of service, and restraint in speech. Although great souls view all beings equally, they were especially moved by the sincerity of his service and therefore bestowed their mercy upon him.

With the permission of those brāhmaṇas, I once partook of the remnants of their food. By that, my sins were removed. Thus, as my heart became purified through such engagement, a genuine attraction arose within me for their spiritual practices and way of life.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi explains that not only the association and service of saintly devotees, but also respectfully accepting their prasāda, contributed to the purification of his heart. This verse shows that every act connected with devotees carries spiritual influence. As his heart became purified, a natural taste and deep appreciation for devotional life gradually awakened within him.

Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here describes a crucial stage in his spiritual transformation. By regularly hearing the narrations of ŚrīKṛṣṇa in the association of saintly devotees, a natural attraction toward the Lord gradually awakened within his heart. This verse teaches that devotion does not arise through force, but blossoms naturally through faithful and attentive hearing of the Lord’s divine glories and pastimes.

O great sage, after I developed attraction for the Lord whose glories are delightful to hear, my intelligence became steady. Through that steady understanding, I perceived this universe of cause and effect as being projected by His māyā potency upon the Supreme Spiritual Reality.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
As his attraction to the narrations of ŚrīKṛṣṇa deepened, spiritual realization began to awaken within Nārada Maharṣi. He explains that bhakti is not merely an emotional experience but the foundation from which genuine spiritual knowledge arises. When the mind becomes firmly established in the Lord’s glories, the true relationship between the universe and the Supreme Reality is gradually perceived as it truly is.

Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here explains how devotion gradually blossomed within him. This verse highlights the purifying power of bhakti and shows that attentive hearing is one of the principal gateways to spiritual advancement.

Through it, he understood how the Lord’s māyā operates, how living beings become bound within it, and how they may transcend it. This knowledge is not merely philosophical understanding; it is liberating wisdom that reveals the path by which the soul can attain the Lord’s supreme abode.

O noble sage, it has been taught that actions dedicated to the Supreme Lord, Bhagavān, who is the Supreme Spiritual Reality, constitute the remedy for the threefold miseries of existence.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here briefly states the true remedy for the spiritual, material, and divine sufferings experienced by living beings. When actions are performed not for selfish purposes but as an offering to the Lord, they cease to be causes of bondage and become means of liberation. This verse teaches that wholehearted dedication of one’s actions to the Lord is the foundation for overcoming the threefold miseries of worldly existence.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
O noble one, the very substance from which a disease arises can, when properly used as a treatment, remove that same disease.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi employs a simple yet profound analogy here. A substance that can cause illness may also become a medicine when used correctly. In the same way, actions that ordinarily bind a living being to worldly existence can become a means of liberation when they are performed in a spirit of dedication to the Lord. The verse teaches that the decisive factor is not the action itself, but the consciousness and purpose with which it is performed.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
Thus, all human activities are ordinarily causes of material bondage. However, those very actions, when dedicated to the Supreme Lord, no longer become causes of material bondage.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
This verse continues the principle illustrated in the previous example. When actions are performed with selfish motives, they bind the living being more deeply to the cycle of worldly existence. Yet when the very same actions are offered to the Lord in a spirit of devotion and surrender, their nature is transformed and they become a means of spiritual upliftment. Nārada Maharṣi teaches that the Bhāgavata path does not require abandoning action, but redirecting it toward the Lord.

Actions performed for the pleasure of the Lord are of primary importance here. The knowledge that arises from and depends upon such actions is indeed accompanied by bhakti yoga.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi here clarifies the relationship between action, knowledge, and devotion. Actions performed with the aim of pleasing the Lord become part of bhakti yoga. The knowledge that develops from such devotionally oriented actions is not merely intellectual understanding but spiritual wisdom that naturally guides the living being closer to the Lord.

True devotion includes carrying out one’s responsibilities in accordance with the Lord’s teachings while simultaneously glorifying His names and qualities and remembering Him. Yathātatha Anuvādam
Obeisance unto You, O Supreme Lord. We meditate upon You as Vāsudeva. Obeisance unto Pradyumna, unto Aniruddha, and also unto Saṅkarṣaṇa.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
This verse is a prayer remembering the fourfold divine manifestations of the Lord. The Pāñcarātra tradition explains that Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha represent divine manifestations through which the Lord carries out various functions within the cosmic order. Through this prayer, Nārada Maharṣi offers his reverence to ŚrīmanNārāyaṇa, the source and foundation of the entire divine arrangement.

Pada - Padārtham
iti : thus; mūrti abhidhānena : through the names of these divine forms; mantra mūrtim : the Lord whose form is revealed through sacred mantras; amūrtikam : transcendent to material forms; yajate : worships; yajña puruṣam : the Supreme Lord who is the enjoyer and personified purpose of all sacrifice; saḥ : he; samyak darśanaḥ : one who possesses true understanding; pumān : a human being.
Yathātatha Anuvādam
Thus, one who worships the Yajña Puruṣa, the Lord whose form is revealed through sacred mantras and who is beyond material forms, by means of these divine names and manifestations, is a person of true understanding.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
This verse teaches that although the Lord transcends all material limitations, He mercifully reveals Himself through divine forms, sacred names, and mantra manifestations for the benefit of devotees. One who properly understands and worships these manifestations attains genuine spiritual insight. Nārada Maharṣi thus indicates that devotion to the Lord’s divine forms and true philosophical understanding are harmonious and complementary rather than opposed to one another.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
O noble brāhmaṇa, when ŚrīKeśava saw that I had faithfully practiced His instruction, He bestowed upon me spiritual knowledge, divine realization, and devotion unto Himself.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
Nārada Maharṣi did not merely hear the teachings he received from the great sages; he put them into practice in his life. As a result of that sincere practice, the Lord blessed him with spiritual knowledge, divine realization, and steadfast devotion. This verse teaches that although spiritual progress begins with hearing, it reaches maturity through faithful application and lived devotion.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
O one endowed with vast scriptural learning, fully describe the renowned glories of the all pervading Lord. By that, the subject sought by the wise will be fulfilled. For those repeatedly afflicted by suffering seek the cessation of their distress through that alone, and not by any other means.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
At the conclusion of this chapter, Nārada Maharṣi gives Vyāsa Maharṣi a clear and direct instruction. He urges him to compose a work that fully reveals the Lord’s spotless glories, divine qualities, and sacred pastimes. Declaring that genuine relief from the sufferings of material existence is attained through hearing and contemplating the Lord’s glories, he establishes the immediate foundation for the manifestation of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam.

Yathātatha Anuvādam
Thus ends the Fifth Chapter of the First Canto of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam, the great Purāṇa and sacred scripture intended for the paramahaṁsas.
Saraḷa Bhāvam
In this chapter, Nārada Maharṣi explained the cause of Vyāsa Maharṣi’s dissatisfaction and taught that devotional literature centered upon the Lord’s spotless glories alone can bestow the highest good upon living beings. Through the account of his own spiritual journey, he revealed the connection between saintly association, hearing the Lord’s glories, the awakening of devotion, and the attainment of divine knowledge, thereby clearly preparing the way for the manifestation of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam.
“Knowledge that does not blossom in the Lord’s spotless glory cannot satisfy the heart; devotion alone brings knowledge to its perfection.”
