Canto 01 | Chapter 11

Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s Arrival in Dvārakā

(As Śrī Kṛṣṇa reaches Dvārakā and announces His arrival with the sound of His conch, the residents of Dvārakā, who have been awaiting Him in separation, joyfully welcome Him. Receiving the loving affection of His relatives, mothers and wives, He conducts Himself like a human being, yet the chapter reveals Him as Parameśvara, transcendental to the qualities of material nature.)

Chapter introduction

In the Tenth Chapter of the First Canto, Śrī Kṛṣṇa begins His return journey from Hastināpura to Dvārakā. Unable to bear separation from Him, the Pāṇḍavas and the members of the Kuru dynasty lovingly accompany Him for some distance, until Śrī Kṛṣṇa consoles them and sends them back. He then travels through regions including Kurujāṅgala, Pāñcāla, Śūrasena, Brahmāvarta, Kurukṣetra, Matsya, Sārasvata, Sauvīra and Ābhīra, and reaches the land of Ānarta. The narrative now enters another joy filled episode with Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s arrival in Dvārakā. Beginning with the residents of Dvārakā eagerly coming forward to see Him upon hearing the sound of His conch, the narrative proceeds through their loving and devotional praises, the splendour of the city of Dvārakā, the grand welcome offered by His relatives and the citizens, and Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s loving reunion with His mothers and wives. Finally, it reveals His divine nature, transcendental to the qualities of material nature, even though He conducts Himself like a human being. Thus, the Eleventh Chapter movingly presents Bhagavān’s arrival, the loving joy of His devotees and His unattached divine nature within a single narrative flow.

In this chapter, Śrī Kṛṣṇa reaches His own territories in the land of Ānarta and sounds His conch, as though dispelling the sorrow of separation felt by the residents of Dvārakā. Hearing the sound of the conch, the people eagerly come forward to meet Him, longing to behold their Bhagavān. With faces blossoming in love, they offer gifts and praise Śrī Kṛṣṇa as little children seek refuge in their father. They declare that His lotus feet are the supreme refuge for those who seek the highest welfare, and that He Himself is their mother, father, well wisher, husband, sadguru and supreme deity. Feeling that they are blessed with a protector because they are able to behold Him, they express the depth of their separation, saying that whenever He goes to other regions, even a single moment seems like ten million years. Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is affectionate towards His devotees, listens to their words and enters Dvārakā, casting His gracious glance upon them.

The city of Dvārakā, protected by the Madhu, Bhoja, Daśārha, Arha, Kukura, Andhaka and Vṛṣṇi dynasties, shines everywhere with gardens, pleasure gardens, sacred trees, creepers and lotus filled lakes. In honour of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s arrival, the gateways, entrances and roads of the city are decorated with festoons, flags and banners; the main roads, streets, marketplaces and crossroads are cleansed and sprinkled with fragrant water; and the entrances of the houses are adorned with full water pots, incense, lamps and auspicious articles. On learning that Śrī Kṛṣṇa is arriving, Vasudeva, Akrūra, Ugrasena, Balarāma, Pradyumna, Sāmba and others joyfully come forward to receive Him. Amid the sounds of conches and trumpets, Vedic recitations, songs and praises, Śrī Kṛṣṇa honours and receives His relatives, the citizens and all those who have come to meet Him, each in a manner appropriate to their respective position.

As Śrī Kṛṣṇa enters the royal road, the women of Dvārakā, regarding the very sight of Him as a great festival, ascend the palaces to behold Him. Although they see Him every day, their eyes are never satisfied by beholding the form of Acyuta, the abode of all beauty. Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s chest is described as the abode of Śrī Devī, His face as the drinking vessel for the eyes, His arms as the refuge of the guardians of the worlds, and His lotus feet as the refuge of His devotees. Adorned with a white parasol, cāmaras, a shower of flowers, yellow garments and a forest garland, Śrī Kṛṣṇa proceeds along the city streets, radiant with extraordinary divine splendour.

Śrī Kṛṣṇa then reaches the residence of His mothers and bows His head before them. Devakī Devī and the other mothers lovingly take Him onto their laps and, overwhelmed with the joy of maternal affection, shed tears of happiness. Śrī Kṛṣṇa then reaches His own residence, and the hearts of His wives overflow with supreme joy upon seeing their husband after the period of separation. They immediately rise from their seats and embrace Him through their sons, through their glances and through the profound love within their hearts. Although they try to restrain their tears out of modesty, tears of joy flow from their eyes as they are overwhelmed by love. Even though Śrī Kṛṣṇa is always near them, His lotus feet are experienced by them as ever new at every moment.

Finally, the chapter reveals the inner significance of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s human like conduct. In His mission to reduce the burden of the earth, He causes enmity to arise among the kings and thereby brings about their mutual destruction. Having descended into the human world through His own māyā, He appears to enjoy life with His wives like an ordinary human being. Yet their beauty, loving smiles, glances and other charms cannot agitate His senses. The ignorant project their own nature onto Him and regard Him as a human being bound by worldly relationships. In reality, although He appears to exist within material nature, He remains untouched by its qualities, and this is the sovereignty of Parameśvara. Thus, while describing the loving joy surrounding Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s arrival in Dvārakā, the Eleventh Chapter ultimately makes clear the truth that He who associates with His devotees in the most intimate manner is Himself Parameśvara, transcendental to all material qualities.

Sūta said: Having reached His own prosperous territories in Ānarta, He blew the excellent conch, as though dispelling their sorrow.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

Śrī Kṛṣṇa reached the prosperous territories of His homeland, Ānarta. As though dispelling the sorrow that the people there had felt in separation from Him, Śrī Kṛṣṇa blew His excellent Pāñcajanya conch. The sound of the conch announced His arrival and brought joy to the people of Ānarta.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

That conch, with its white middle portion, although taking on the redness of the red lips of Him who performs exceedingly great deeds, shone as it was being blown within the hollow of His lotus like hands, like a royal swan sounding loudly amidst a cluster of lotuses.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The conch that Śrī Kṛṣṇa was blowing was naturally white. Yet, through contact with His red lips, it shone even more beautifully, as though it had taken on a reddish radiance. Held between Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s lotus like hands and sounding forth, that white conch appeared like a royal swan sitting beautifully amidst a cluster of lotuses and calling out loudly. In this way, the sight of Śrī Kṛṣṇa blowing His conch is described through an exceptionally beautiful comparison.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

Having heard that sound, which causes fear even to the fear of the world, all the people, eager to behold their Bhagavān, came forth to meet Him.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The residents of Dvārakā heard the powerful sound of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s conch, which causes fear even to the fear of the world. Realising that their Bhagavān, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, had returned, all the people became intensely eager to behold Him. Unable to wait any longer for His darśana, they all came forth to meet Śrī Kṛṣṇa. In this way, the sound of His conch immediately transformed the residents’ longing to behold Him into action.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

There, like offering a lamp to the sun, they reverentially presented offerings to Him who rejoices within Himself and whose every desire is fulfilled, always for the gain that accrues to themselves.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The residents of Dvārakā came to behold Śrī Kṛṣṇa, reverentially bringing offerings for Him. Yet Śrī Kṛṣṇa, being Ātmārāma, one who rejoices within Himself, and Pūrṇakāma, one whose every desire is fulfilled, has nothing to gain from such offerings. Just as offering a lamp to the sun cannot supply anything that the sun lacks, their offerings cannot fulfil any deficiency in Him. Nevertheless, devotees lovingly make such offerings as an expression of their reverence, devotion and desire to serve Him. Through such offerings, they do not fulfil any need in Bhagavān; rather, the true gain belongs to the devotees themselves, through the opportunity to serve Him.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

With faces blossoming with love and voices faltering with joy, they spoke like little children addressing a father, one who is the well wisher of all and their protector.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

Overjoyed to behold Śrī Kṛṣṇa again, the faces of the residents of Dvārakā blossomed with love. The joy overflowing in their hearts made their voices falter as they spoke. Like little children approaching a father who loves and protects them, they lovingly addressed Śrī Kṛṣṇa, regarding Him as the well wisher of all and as their protector. Their joy at regaining their most beloved Śrī Kṛṣṇa after a long separation was clearly visible not only in their words, but also in their blossoming faces. Along with their reverence for Śrī Kṛṣṇa, their words naturally expressed the loving bond through which they regarded Him as their most intimate relation.

O Nātha! We always bow to the lotus of Your feet, which is worshipped with obeisance by the creator, Brahmādeva, by those related to the creator, the sons of Brahmā, and by the ruler of the devas, Devendra. For those who seek welfare in this world, it is the supreme refuge, where even time, the supreme ruler, cannot exert its influence.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The residents of Dvārakā declare that they always bow to the lotus feet of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, which are worshipped even by Brahmādeva, his sons and Devendra. They regard Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet, where even time cannot exert its influence, as the supreme refuge for those who seek true welfare in this world. Their words convey that true protection and welfare are attained by taking refuge in the lotus feet of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is beyond even time, which holds all living beings under its sway. Thus, the words of the residents of Dvārakā express their firm conviction that the lotus feet of Śrī Kṛṣṇa are their supreme refuge.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The residents of Dvārakā pray to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, “O creator and sustainer of the entire universe! Please remain with us for our welfare.” They regard Śrī Kṛṣṇa Himself as their mother, father, well wisher, master and Sadguru. Moreover, they accept Him as their supreme worshipful deity. Considering themselves virtuous only because they follow Śrī Kṛṣṇa, they declare that He alone is the foundation of all their relationships, guidance and welfare in life.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The residents of Dvārakā express to Śrī Kṛṣṇa the pain they experience in separation from Him. Whenever Śrī Kṛṣṇa goes to the Kuru land, the Madhu land or to see His well wishers, even a single moment spent away from Him seems to them as long as ten million years. Just as it is difficult for the eyes to see without the sun, being without Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s presence feels exceedingly unbearable to them. It is because of their profound love for Him that even a brief separation is experienced as such an immense length of time.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

O Bhagavān! When You remain away for a long time, how can we live without beholding Your captivating face, which removes all suffering through Your gracious glance and is adorned with a beautiful smile?

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The residents of Dvārakā express even more deeply that they cannot bear separation from Śrī Kṛṣṇa. If He remains away from them for a long time, they ask how they can live without beholding His beautiful face. Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s gracious glance removes all their suffering, and His beautiful smile captivates their minds. Thus, beholding His face brings them immense joy, while spending a long time without seeing Him feels like an unbearable separation.

Although they bashfully tried to restrain them, tears flowed from both their eyes because they were overwhelmed with emotion.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The wives of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, filled with profound love, first embraced their husband within their hearts. Then they embraced Him with their loving glances and, by sending their sons to embrace Him, experienced the feeling of embracing Him themselves. Although they naturally tried to restrain their emotions out of bashfulness, tears of joy flowed from their eyes because they were overwhelmed. Thus, their profound love naturally found expression within their hearts, through their glances and finally through their tears of joy.

Pada - Padārtham

yadi api : although; asau : He; pārśva gataḥ : being by their side; rahaḥ gataḥ : being with them in private; tathā api : even so; tasya : His; aṅghri yugam : pair of feet; navam navam : ever new again and again; pade pade : at every step; kā : who; virameta : could turn away; tat padāt : from His feet; calā api : although naturally fickle; yat : which; śrīḥ : Śrī Devī; na jahāti karhicit : never leaves.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

Although Śrī Kṛṣṇa was by the side of His wives and with them in private, His pair of feet appeared ever new to them again and again at every step. Even Śrī Devī, though naturally fickle, never leaves those feet. Who, then, could turn away from His feet?

Saraḷa Bhāvam

Although Śrī Kṛṣṇa was always close to His wives and was intimate with them even in private, His pair of feet was experienced by them as ever new at every moment. Even Śrī Devī, though naturally fickle, never leaves His feet. How, then, could the wives of Śrī Kṛṣṇa ever turn away from His feet? The fact that even in constant closeness His feet were always experienced by them as ever new movingly conveys their profound love for Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

Pada - Padārtham

evam : in this way; nṛpāṇām : among the kings; kṣiti bhāra janmanām : of those born as a burden upon the earth; akṣauhiṇībhiḥ : with akṣauhiṇī armies; parivṛtta tejasām : whose power was surrounded by; vidhāya vairam : having caused enmity; śvasanaḥ : the wind; yathā : like; analam : fire; mithaḥ : mutually; vadhena : through killing; uparataḥ : ceased; nirāyudhaḥ : without weapons.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

In this way, among the kings who were born as a burden upon the earth and whose power was surrounded by akṣauhiṇī armies, while Himself remaining without weapons, He caused enmity just as the wind kindles fire. Through their mutually killing one another, He then ceased from His task.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

Śrī Kṛṣṇa caused mutual enmity among the kings who had been born as a burden upon the earth and who possessed the immense strength of akṣauhiṇī armies. Just as the wind kindles fire, enmity intensified among them, and they killed one another. In this way, without Himself employing a weapon, Śrī Kṛṣṇa brought about the mutual destruction of the kings and completed His task. The principal point expressed here is that, while Himself remaining without weapons, He caused enmity among them and thereby brought about their mutual destruction.

Pada - Padārtham

saḥ eṣaḥ : He Himself; naraloke : in the human world; asmin : this; avatīrṇaḥ : having descended; svamāyayā : by His own māyā; reme : enjoyed; strīratna kūṭasthaḥ : situated amidst a multitude of excellent women; bhagavān : Bhagavān; prākṛtaḥ : an ordinary person; yathā : like.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

He Himself, having descended into this human world by His own māyā, was Bhagavān, situated amidst a multitude of excellent women, yet He enjoyed like an ordinary human being.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa descended into this human world by His own māyā and enjoyed like an ordinary human being amidst His exalted queens. Although outwardly His life appeared like the married life of an ordinary human being, He remained Bhagavān Himself. Living in the closest intimacy with human beings and conducting Himself like one of them does not in any way alter His divine nature. Although He is Bhagavān, His enjoying with His queens like an ordinary human being conveys the natural saulabhya manifested in His līlā.

Pada - Padārtham

uddāma : profound; bhāva : feeling; piśuna : expressing; amala : pure; valgu hāsa : charming smile; vrīḍā avaloka : bashful glances; nihataḥ : conquered; madanaḥ api : even Madana; yāsām : whose; sammuhya : becoming captivated; cāpam : bow; ajahāt : cast aside; pramadā uttamāḥ : the foremost among women; tāḥ : they; yasya : whose; indriyam : sense; vimathitum : to agitate; kuhakaiḥ : with alluring gestures; na śekuḥ : were unable.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

The pure and charming smiles expressing the profound feelings of those foremost among women, together with their bashful glances, conquered even Madana, who, becoming captivated, cast aside his bow. Yet those foremost among women were unable to agitate the senses of Śrī Kṛṣṇa with their alluring gestures.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The pure and charming smiles of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s queens and their bashful, loving glances were so attractive that even Madana became captivated by them and cast aside his bow. Yet those queens, who were the foremost among women, were unable to agitate the senses of Śrī Kṛṣṇa with their alluring gestures. Although He enjoyed in the closest intimacy with them, Śrī Kṛṣṇa was not subject to the senses like an ordinary human being. Even in the company of His most attractive queens, His divine nature and control of the senses remained completely undisturbed.

Padavicchedam

tam ayam manyate lokaḥ hi asaṅgam api saṅginam ।
ātma aupamyena manujam vyāpṛṇvānam yataḥ abudhaḥ ॥

Pada - Padārtham

tam : Him; ayam lokaḥ : this world; hi : certainly; manyate : considers; asaṅgam api : although unattached; saṅginam : as one who is attached; ātma aupamyena : by comparing Him with oneself; manujam : as a human being; vyāpṛṇvānam : as one engaged in activities; yataḥ : because; abudhaḥ : ignorant.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

Because this world is ignorant, by comparing Him with oneself, it certainly considers Him, although unattached, to be a human being engaged in activities and possessed of attachment.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

Although Śrī Kṛṣṇa is by nature bound by no worldly attachment whatsoever, ignorant people compare Him with their own nature and assume that He too has attachments like theirs. Because He appears to be engaged in many activities like a human being, they understand Him to be an ordinary human being possessed of attachment. When living beings measure Bhagavān’s human like līlās by their own limited experience, they are unable to comprehend His true divine nature, which is entirely free from attachment.

Padavicchedam

etat īśanam īśasya prakṛtisthaḥ api tat guṇaiḥ ।
na yujyate sadā ātmasthaiḥ yathā buddhiḥ tat āśrayā ॥

Pada - Padārtham

etat : this itself; īśanam : sovereignty; īśasya : of Īśvara; prakṛtisthaḥ api : although situated within prakṛti; tat guṇaiḥ : with its qualities; na yujyate : does not become associated; sadā : always; ātmasthaiḥ : with those situated within itself; yathā : just as; buddhiḥ : the intellect; tat āśrayā : that which is their support.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

Just as the intellect, although it is the support of those things that are always situated within it, does not become associated with them, in the same way, although Īśvara is situated within prakṛti, He does not become associated with its qualities. This itself is the sovereignty of Īśvara.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

Although Śrī Kṛṣṇa descends within prakṛti, He is never bound by its qualities. Just as objects are situated within the intellect and the intellect serves as their support, yet the intellect is not affected by them, Bhagavān, although performing His līlās within prakṛti in human form, is not subject to its qualities. The independence by which Śrī Kṛṣṇa remains transcendental to the qualities of prakṛti even while present within it is His inherent sovereignty. While the ordinary living being is subject to the qualities of prakṛti, Īśvara is not controlled by them. This is the fundamental distinction between the living being and Īśvara.

Pada - Padārtham

tam : Him; menire : considered; abalāḥ : the women; mūḍhāḥ : deluded; straiṇam : as one who is subject to women; ca : and; anuvratam : as one who follows them; rahaḥ : in private; apramāṇavidaḥ : not knowing the true measure; bhartuḥ : of their husband; īśvaram : Īśvara; matayaḥ : minds; yathā : how.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

Those deluded women, not knowing the true measure of their husband, considered Him in private to be one who was subject to women and who followed them. How could their minds truly comprehend Īśvara?

Saraḷa Bhāvam

The queens of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, unable to comprehend fully the true greatness of their husband, saw how favourably He behaved towards them in private and considered Him to be subject to them and to follow them. Because they experienced such intimate married life with Him, they were unable fully to recognise His supreme sovereignty as Īśvara. They could not completely comprehend that the very Śrī Kṛṣṇa who interacted with them with such intimacy was Īśvara, and that His true greatness was beyond their understanding.

Yathātatha Anuvādam

Thus ends the Eleventh Chapter of the First Canto of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Mahāpurāṇa, the Saṁhitā pertaining to the paramahaṁsas.

Saraḷa Bhāvam

Thus ends the Eleventh Chapter of the First Canto of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s arrival in Dvārakā, the immense joy of the residents of Dvārakā upon beholding Him, the loving grand welcome they offered Him, and the intimate manner in which He interacted with those who were His own stand out movingly throughout the chapter. Amid the maternal affection of His mothers and the profound love of His queens, the very Śrī Kṛṣṇa who moves among them with complete naturalness is Īśvara, transcendental to the qualities of prakṛti and to attachment to the senses. Without in any way diminishing His saulabhya, through which He becomes most intimately accessible to His devotees, His paratva shines forth in its fullness.

“Bhagavān’s saulabhya does not conceal His paratva; He who is Parameśvara Himself becomes most intimately accessible to His devotees.”
