ŚrīmadBhāgavatam | Parāyaṇam
Canto 01 | Chapter 02
Establishing the principles of devotion to Bhagavān
(Sūta Maharṣi explains the nature of devotion to Bhagavān as the essence of dharma, the glory of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam, and the supremacy of bhakti yoga as the foremost path to the highest good.)
Chapter introduction
In the Second Chapter, Sūta Mahārṣi responds to the questions raised by Śaunaka and the assembled sages, explaining the supreme goal of human life. He teaches that the essence of all dharma is to awaken selfless devotion to the Supreme Lord and describes how the heart becomes purified through bhakti, allowing realization of the Supreme Truth to gradually unfold.
This chapter further explains that hearing ŚrīmadBhāgavatam and glorifying ŚrīmanNārāyaṇa sanctify the inner being, remove the influence of the modes of passion and ignorance, and establish steady devotion within the heart. By clearly revealing the relationship between bhakti, knowledge, and detachment, it establishes devotion to the Supreme Lord as the foremost path to ultimate welfare and spiritual perfection.
