ŚrīmadBhāgavatam

ŚrīmadBhāgavatam Canto 01 stands as the gateway of study into the complete flow of this Mahāpurāṇa. The questions raised by the sages at Naimiśāraṇya are not merely scriptural inquiries; they emerge as an urgent search into how the living being may attain eternal welfare in Kali Yuga. Through this canto, study itself takes shape as a spiritual journey that begins through inquiry.

Within this canto, the decline of dharma, the inward emptiness that arose after the completion of ŚrīKṛṣṇa’s manifest avatāra līlā, the influence of Kali Yuga, and the instability of human life gradually unfold. Each event within this setting establishes the foundation for why ŚrīmadBhāgavatam must be heard and why it must be studied.

With the arrival of Mahārāja Parīkṣit, this canto assumes a more personal and inward direction. The sacred dialogue that unfolds between the king facing death directly and ŚrīŚuka Mahārṣi, who appears to instruct him, connects study not merely to intellectual examination, but directly to life itself and the supreme destination.

From the perspective of Adhyayanam, this canto is especially significant. It is here that the principal questions of ŚrīmadBhāgavatam, the tradition of sacred hearing, the guru śiṣya paramparā, the direction of bhakti, and the theological flow first appear in an organised manner. This canto becomes the foundation for many teachings and līlās that will unfold throughout the later cantos.

Each chapter of this canto is presented systematically through ślokapāṭha, sacred hearing, padaviccheda, padam – padārtham, and yathātatha English translation. Through this approach, the reader gradually gains understanding not only of the narrative flow, but also of the structure of the ślokas and the devotional theological direction contained within them.
